Brown Metcalf Research Courtyard
Providence, RI

The landscape plan for the renovations a historic building at Brown University includes improvements of the streetscape at Thayer, an addition of an accessible ramp at Lincoln Field entrance, and a courtyard design that will serve as both an outdoor informal gathering place and a quieter, contemplative space.

A simple planting palette of understory trees, linear evergreen hedges, and groundcover is reminiscent of the more traditional landscapes outside the courtyard. A refined palette of paving materials creates an interesting pattern when viewed from above. The division of a single open courtyard into a gathering plaza and a smaller, more intimate space creates a versatile outdoor space for the building, now called Metcalf Research Building.
