Blueberry Hill House
Chilmark, MA
A 75-acre property in Chilmark on Martha’s Vineyard that was previously a bed and breakfast called Blueberry Hill House had a layered framework of development and natural areas. The property abuts a conservation area with shared trails for public use. The owners, in collaboration with South Mountain Company and STIMSON, studied a redevelopment and restoration plan for the property. Environmental stewardship, cradle to cradle material selection, energy use reduction, protection of high-quality native areas, and native area restoration were the key aspirations of the site’s redevelopment. The site plan restored 10 acres of endangered, indigenous sand plant meadow community, increasing the diversity of ecotypes and habitat. A ground-mounted solar field was installed as part of the site work, offsetting the energy use for the property.
