STIMSON Celebrates 25 Years!
At the height of the summer, STIMSON gathered with friends, family, and colleagues to celebrate the projects, places, and—most importantly—the people that have shaped the firm over the last 25 years. Since its beginnings on Cape Cod in 1992, STIMSON has grown from a local firm specializing in residential design to a nationally-recognized, award-winning studio working across the spectrum of designed landscapes. Be sure to check out our Instagram for some project highlights over the last 25 years!
STIMSON visits the Arnold Arboretum
With spring in full force, Michael and Glen recently led the crew on a plant walk at the Arnold Arboretum. Part of Boston’s iconic Emerald Necklace, the Arboretum covers over 280 acres across the Jamaica Plain and Roslindale neighborhoods. STIMSON spent the afternoon exploring the extensive collection of trees, shrubs, and vines, delighting in the vibrant colors and textures of the season in bloom.
STIMSON Spring Dig at Charbrook Nursery
Last week, our designers had the opportunity to step out into the spring air and participate in Charbrook Nursery’s annual tree dig. Using Charbrook’s new tree spade, yards of burlap, and intricate knots, the team dug and bound trees and shrubs of various sizes and species, to be installed in projects throughout New England over the coming year.
Ferrous Signage Studies - in the shop
STIMSON is digging into a series of signage options for the recently opened Ferrous Site Park in Lawrence, MA. We are currently studying a timber entry sign made from Black Locust trees that had fallen on site. After being taken to a local shop to be milled, the timbers were then transported to a nearby metal fabricator, who is working with us to develop steel forms that will be used to “brand” (burn) the name across a series of upright timbers. Stay tuned as this process unfolds!
FARM > STUDIO > NURSERY
STIMSON is delighted to have one of our Principals lecture at the 28th Annual Landscape Design Symposium at both Connecticut College on Friday January 13th, and again at the Morris Arboretum on Saturday, January 20th. His talk focuses on how STIMSON’s Charbrook Nursery informs and advances our design.
Happy Holidays from STIMSON Team
STIMSON celebrated the holiday season with our annual evening at Charbrook Farm. The food was wonderful, the drink festive, and the Yankee Swap hysterical. Santa even sent three of his reindeer to help MC the evening and ensure no one was unruly during what is always a competitive event. We at STIMSON wish you all a wonderful holiday season and wish you a very happy and healthy New Year.
Quarry Point Residence
STIMSON has been carefully observing the construction of the Quarry Point Residence located in Cohasset, MA. This project is the result of a close partnership with Tom Catalano Architects, ensuring that the architecture and landscape work together to celebrate the natural features of the site. All of the stonework surrounding was fabricated from on site ledge removal. This was both a sustainable practice, while also allowing the walls and terraces to better blend with its surroundings.
STIMSON at the ASLA Annual Meeting & Expo
This week STIMSON is travelling to New Orleans to take part in the largest “landscape” event of the Year: The American Society of Landscape Architects Annual Meeting & Expo. This year STIMSON will not only receive an ASLA award in the Residential Category for our Chilmark Residence, but participate in two presentations at the conference.
New Year. New Quad.
STIMSON was excited to welcome the students of Williams College back to campus with the completion of their new humanities quad. For the past three years STIMSON has worked closely with the school designing a new quad to appropriately re-frame the renovated Stetson Library and the long views toward the Green Mountains.
Tower Hill Botanic Garden Master Plan Approved!
After a yearlong intensive Master Plan process with Tower Hill Botanic Garden and its stakeholders, STIMSON is excited to announce that the Master Plan has been unanimously approved and adopted by the Board of Trustees.
Pulaski Park Opens!
The STIMSON team was thrilled to be a part of the official opening of Pulaski Park on July 22. STIMSON has been working closely with the city of Northampton and its community over the last several years to revitalize the beloved 1 acre park at the heart of its downtown. Every element was considered, is authentic, and represents the unique sense of place. Materials reflect the history and culture of the city, where the elements of the park are designed to be adaptable and flexible for its multitude of users.
Associate + Licensure
STIMSON is pleased to announce that Matthew Brown has been promoted to Associate.
STIMSON wants to congratulate Stephen Carrolla, Garrett Stone, Millee S. Pradhan, and Chris Buccino on passing their LARE examinations to become the most recent licensed Landscape Architects on our talented team of designers. Way to go!

STIMSON at Boston Society of Landscape Architects Gala!
STIMSON attended another successful Boston Society of Landscape Architects Gala this year. We were honored to receive a BSLA Merit Award for our Forest Park Project, as well as have the opportunity to celebrate the success of all our colleagues. It is evident through the photo booth that we all enjoyed a night of recognizing great work and being part of a great team.
MIT Killian Court Under Construction
STIMSON is excited to share that the first phase of MIT’s Renewal Plan for Killian Court is nearing completion! This portion of the project includes improvements to the “River Terrace” along Memorial Drive, restoration of one of the side courts, and two new masonry ramps to provide ADA access to and from the Main Group of buildings. We are still awaiting permanent landscape furnishings and some warm weather to allow the planting of the perennial beds. A great first step towards a long term vision for renewing this historic landscape at the core of the MIT Campus.
STIMSON Winter Wonderland
February finally brought a beautiful winter weekend to New England. One of our Principals, Eddie Marshall, was on Cape Cod and captured two of our previous projects white washed with snow. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where its weathered steel runnel provided a stark contrast with its white covered hills, and Teaticket Park, where the low lying wet areas appeared to vanish into soft blues with whites. The wet snow combined with cold evening temperatures caused it to freeze to the vegetation, creating a unique visual experience of our built landscapes.
Harvard Allston in Process!
STIMSON is excited to share renderings of the new Harvard Science and Engineering Complex in Allston. This project occupies the foundation constructed for the original Allston Science project in 2006 and plans to serve as a crucial evolution in Harvard’s campus. This project will begin construction this year.
The STIMSON team celebrated the holiday season with our annual Charbrook Party. It was an evening of delicious food, tasty drinks, and the coveted Yankee Swap. It was by no means a silent night, but one of festive conversation, storytelling, and laughter. We at STIMSON hope you all had a wonderful holiday and wish you a healthy and happy New Year.
ASLA and ABX Presentations
STIMSON was proud to have two of our Principals participate in Conference presentations in November!
American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) 2015 Awards
STIMSON is thrilled to receive an ASLA Honor Award for Phil Hardberger Park.
The 2015 jury wrote that “the landscape architect bridges the formal and romantic parts of the park and embraces both. There is a place for everyone.”
